Sure, it’s a bit like playing with fire. In every midterm election, the Democrats want to go up against the most extreme, Trump-loving of the MAGAs out there, and so far it’s worked out well in Georgia, Pennsylvania and Ohio. When it was Arizona’s turn, they came through exactly as you’d expect from a state with a Republican party offering an election denier as secretary of state for vote counting. The only problem is when those extremists start winning. But we’ll come back to that below.
Looking back to the sunny side of the road. Young and Extreme (Really Extreme) Blake Masters won the United States Senate primaries from Arizona. Again, Mitch McConnell is counting the number of US Senate seats Trump has cost him in the past and could cost him this next election. Blake Masters would win in Idaho. But Arizona voted for Joe Biden and Mark Kelly in 2020. So in 2022 Blake Masters will have to face the same Mark Kelly. Miraculously, the GOP Republicans chose the fire-breathing man who scares women, and they chose “that man” to take on the world’s best husband, legendary astronaut and all-around good guy, Mark Kelly.
As if that wasn’t bad enough, Masters has to beat Mark Kelly in the same year the voters of Kansas (Kansas!) simply shouted their dismay at the resulting work of the extremists on women and abortion.
This is just one example of the plethora of gifts that Arizonan GOP primary voters gave to Democrats, according to highly respected strategist John Heilemann on Morning Joe:
“You said it was a good night for Donald Trump in Arizona, and also a good night for the Arizona Democrats in Arizona.
“You know, as we know, when we think about the electoral map, the two major new swing states are Georgia and Arizona, states that are changing dramatically in terms of demographic composition, in terms of ethics and composition, but suburban places that Joe Biden was able to win those states.”
“What we have seen is the Arizona Republican Party has been taken over by the idiots. That’s great for Donald Trump, but not great for Republicans, that will have to compete statewide, especially in a state like Arizona, which is a purple-trending blue state, not a red state. So I’d say, look, we can’t predict the future, but are Democrats in Arizona who like the results? Some of them hope for the results in many cases, because they are easier to beat.
Mainstream Republicans, don’t despair. Donald Trump will drive a victory lap in many races. If we’re right about how this could turn out really well, this could turn out to be a Pyrrhic victory for Donald Trump, as many of these candidates are weak candidates and the Democrats have a strong hand to play in the fall. ”
A strong hand? It takes a strong and steady hand to get back into the atmosphere from Earth orbit and a strong, steady hand to rehabilitate a woman, Rep. Gabbie Giffords, who was shot in the head. But it’s Mark Kelly’s equally steadfast spirit that’s probably most happy with the Master’s win. Arizona’s purple voters could hold the key to the 2022 Senate majority. NASA handed Mark Kelly the keys to the space shuttle. Many highly educated women in the suburbs would not hand over the keys to their van to Masters.
Of course, the key to all of this is to defeat those extremists, otherwise this will turn into a democratic nightmare. But if Georgia 2020 and Kansas 2022 are any clues, the Democrats are setting up much better than they had hoped a year ago. Meanwhile, someone can now send a blood pressure cuff to McConnell’s office.
