Steven Gerrard is still hoping to make two more transfer additions this month – with a third January signing reportedly closing in on the ambitious Aston Villa boss.
The Villans, alongside Newcastle and Everton, are the most proactive Premier League side this month. Indeed, Gerrard’s troops have already impressed with the loan signing of Philippe Coutinho and the £25m snap of Lucas Digne. Villa also secured a third window signing on Friday, bring in 17-year-old defender Kerr Smith from Dundee United.
But it looks like Villa are far from over.
According to DailyMirror, Gerrard continues to push for two deals that he believes can take them to the next level.
The first is Yves Bissouma from Brighton. The midfielder is considered one of the best midfielders in the Premier League outside the top six. And while his capture will likely be hand Villa a club record fee, Gerrard remains relentless.
Signing a new center half is also in his thinking. Axel Tuanzebe’s departure for Napoli leaves Villa looking light in the region. And while new boy Smith could play there, the 17-year-old is unlikely to be considered as an option.
“There could be opportunities again,” Gerrard said when asked about future transfers. “It’s the steel and the style that we’re looking for.
“Can we find that level of player that will improve the team? Or do we need injury or suspension coverage? I like having four central defenders and we only have three, so we are analyzing this situation.
Steven Gerrard and Harrison welcome Kerr Smith
Villa are, however, delighted to have welcomed Smith through the door as Villa’s third window signing.
“We’re delighted Kerr has joined us, he’s a player we’ve followed and watched for a long time,” said academy manager Mark Harrison. Villa website.
“He has a lot of potential but has already had some fantastic experiences at first-team level with Dundee United, which is rare for a 17-year-old.
“We’re really excited to see how he’s developing and hopefully one day we’ll see him become a regular in our first team.”
Robin Olsen will become Villa’s number four signing
Villa, however, are making progress in their efforts to bring in Roma goalkeeper Robin Olsen.
The Swedish star is currently on loan for a season at Sheffield United, but has not played since November after losing his place.
As such, the Blades are ready to let him go, while transfer guru Fabrizio Romano claims a move to Villa is close.
Olsen will provide cover and competition for No. 1 Emiliano Martinez at Villa Park.
Meanwhile, Blades boss Paul Heckingbottom has shed some light on the deal.
“There’s potential there, but nothing yet,” Heckingbottom said when asked about Olsen’s situation.
“This is one of the situations we are monitoring, but nothing has happened yet. There’s been speculation about Robin, but it’s in our hands, so the only way he can do that is if we have a replacement.
