Former acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney predicted on Wednesday that Donald Trump will not win the presidency again in 2024.
Trump could become the GOP nominee if there is a crowded primary field, Mulvaney told TSTIME’s Kasie Hunt. But the former president will eventually lose the general election “because he’s turning it into a referendum on himself.”
“It’s not Donald Trump versus Joe Biden or anyone. It’s not Republican versus Democrat,” said Mulvaney, who, as Trump’s acting chief of staff, admitted the then-president’s backlash with Ukraine.
“It’s Donald Trump versus Donald Trump and one of the people who can beat Donald Trump is Donald Trump. That is exactly what happened in 2020,” he continued.
“A bunch of people could beat Trump” in a direct primary, such as Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) and Senator Tim Scott (RS.C.). But Trump would prevail if it’s a bigger field, he said.
When asked if potential GOP presidential candidates should “check their egos” to narrow the field and prevent Trump from winning the nomination, Mulvaney advised them not to define themselves in reference to Trump.
However, he refused to endorse rumors about hopefuls, saying he was friends with them.
