How was Jeffrey Dahmer finally caught?

Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story has brought the Dahmer case back into the public eye. But instead of just focusing on Jeffrey Dahmer and his many crimes, Sample takes this story one step further, delving deeper into who his victims were and what happened after his capture, trial, and death.

Like the rest of this case, Sample is quite accurate when it comes to portraying what happened at the end of Dahmer’s life. Here’s exactly what happened.

How was Jeffrey Dahmer finally caught?

Two months after 14-year-old Konerak Sinthasomphone escaped from Dahmer’s apartment and was returned by police, Dahmer met 32-year-old Tracy Edwards. As soon as Edwards entered Dahmer’s apartment, he became suspicious of the smell. Dahmer handcuffed Edwards and held him hostage with a knife, forcing the other man to the… The Exorcist III with him. In an effort to keep Dahmer from attacking him, Edwards recalled constantly reassuring the other man that they were friends. Noticing that Dahmer was distracted, he set him in motion. Edwards beat the killer and ran out of his apartment.

At 11:30 p.m. on July 22, 1991, Edwards flagged down two police officers, Robert Rauth and Rolf Mueller. He told them that a man had tried to kill him and led him to Dahmer’s apartment. Dahmer allowed them to enter and one of the officers searched Dahmer’s bedside table for the key to Edwards’s handcuffs. Then he saw the Polaroids. The photos showed several bodies in various states of mutilation. Both officers overpowered the serial killer and captured him. Once he was stopped, they found the head of one of Dahmer’s victims in the fridge – a sign of the horrors hidden in this apartment.

Once Dahmer was arrested, he quickly confessed to his crimes. While questioned by officers, he said: “I created this horror and it only makes sense that I would do everything I could to put an end to it.” In that same interview, he confessed to killing 16 boys and young men in Wisconsin, as well as one victim — Steven Hicks — in Ohio.

At his trial, Dahmer was deemed sane and sentenced to life imprisonment plus 10 years for the first two murders. The remaining 13 counts carried a mandatory life sentence plus 70 years. He also received a 16th life sentence in Ohio for the murder of Hicks. The death penalty was not an option because it had already been abolished by the state of Wisconsin.

How did Jeffrey Dahmer die?

Although Dahmer received 16 life sentences, he spent very little time in prison. On November 28, 1994, Dahmer was assigned a working detail with two other inmates: Jesse Anderson and Christopher Scarver. Both were also convicted murderers, Anderson for killing his wife and Scarver for killing a Wisconsin Conservation Corps employee. Scarver first attacked Dahmer with a metal bar before attacking Anderson. He would later claim that God told him to kill both Dahmer and Anderson. Dahmer died of his injuries an hour after the attack, and Scarver received two additional life sentences.

What is Jeffrey Dahmer’s former apartment building now?

The Oxford Apartments, where 12 of Dahmer’s 17 victims were murdered and dismembered, no longer exists. Located at 924 North 25th Street in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, residents of the building were forced to leave shortly after Dahmer’s arrest, and the complex was demolished in November 1992. To this day it remains a wasteland. There have been plans over the years to turn the space into a park, garden, or memorial to honor the victims of this horrific chapter of American history. So far, none of those plans have gotten off the ground.
