Japan sets up ¥10 trillion university fund to increase support for research

The central government plans to establish a fund totaling approximately ¥10 trillion (approximately $70 billion) to provide intensive financial aid to a limited number of universities recognized as “research schools of international eminence.”

The fund will give several tens of billions of yen a year to each of the universities, which aspire to be ranked among the best research bases in the world, to increase their research capabilities, including through the development of long-term human resources.
