Panthers HC Matt Rhule annoyed after foul celebrates 50-yard TD

The Carolina Panthers have not had much to celebrate under head coach Matt Rhule, especially on offense. And even if they have that reason, like on Saturday, it’s quite fleeting.

A whole scene erupted during scrimmage action this morning, immediately after quarterback Baker Mayfield found receiver Rashard Higgins for a beauty of a 50-yard touchdown pass. The score set a particularly cheering celebration for the wideout and his teammates, one – in fact – worth a mock penalty from a camp official.

That, in turn, was a sign from Rhule – who stopped training, yelled at his players and caused his attack to run down the sidelines.

Rhule told reporters that while celebrations are encouraged, they must be timely.

“We are not a team that reaches the ball over the goal line,” he said. “I said to the guys, ‘Hey, celebrate after you score a touchdown. Have fun today.’ This isn’t a real game but we play it like a game between the white lines and all Great play by Higgy He made a great touchdown catch But I wanted to make sure they all understood we won’t win if we not protect football.

“Sometimes as a coach you also have to make sure that the intensity stays the whole training,” he added with a grin. “But I wanted the defense to understand that we can’t give up explosives and the offense to understand that we don’t celebrate until the game is over.”
