India will begin its ODI preparations for next year’s 50-over World Cup at home with a three-match series against New Zealand. With big players missing, this is a chance for team management to try some new faces. The likes of Sanju Samson and Umran Malik, who were benched for the T20is, should be given the green light to see what value they can bring to the team. It is also a chance for India to end their four match losing streak against New Zealand in the format. Last time they were there they had lost the ODI series 0-3.

Here’s what we think should be India’s playing XI for 1st ODI against New Zealand in Auckland

1) Shichar Dhawan: The replacement captain is now a one-size player and the 2023 ICC World Cup could very well be his swan song. Dhawan has been India’s most prolific white ball batsman for the last ten years after Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma and from now on every match is an opportunity for him to give his best for the national team.

2) Shubman Gill: Tipped to be the future of Indian percussion, Shubman is beginning to show the consistency many have expected of him. With KL Rahul failing to take his chances, a good showing from Shubman could completely close the door for Rahul.

3) Suryakumar Yadav:The longer he hits, the better he looks. This series presents the batsman in form to show that he can also speed up his innings and hit big shots in the ODI format.

4) Shreyas Iyer: Another batter who promises a lot but is often flattered to deceive. His vulnerability to the rising pitch is now a known fact and the batter must avoid falling into that trap and contribute nicely to the team’s cause.

5) Sanju Samson: Sanju Samson deserves a long run in the team as if he cements his place, India would have a batsman who can knock the opponent out of the match with his attacking instinct.

6) Rishabh Pants:Despite his failures in the T20 format, Pant has been a much better player in 50-over cricket and should provide solidity to the team in the absence of key players.

7) Deepak Hooda: Deepak Hooda will provide extra depth in his batting and he will also have the responsibility of bowling 10 overs. Hooda is a regular bowler on the domestic circuit and it’s a good chance to see if he can bowl a full 10-over quota or not.

8) Shardul Thakur: Thakur offers skill with both bat and ball. Given his all-round abilities, he will be an important member of the team.

9) Umran Malik: Fast pace is something India lacks in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah and Umran Malik should have opportunities to develop into an asset to the team.

10) Yuzvendra Chahal: The leg spinner is a proven wicket taker and must lead the bowling attack in the absence of several senior members.

11) Arshdeep Singh: India’s biggest find this year should bring its T20I form to the over-50s format
